(Pianos and Politics in China: Middle -class Ambitions and the Struggle over Western Music), (Cultural Revolution Model Works and the Politics of Modernization in China: An Analysis of Taking Tiger Mountain by Strategy)

Studies on the music of the Cultural Revolution periodappeared in a larger number after year 2000, compared to the period immediatelyafter Mao Zedong’s seizure of power. The education field in the current literatureand art worlds of China is seeking a new direction for research on thehistorical period of Cultural Revolution, which is special and a topic of greatinterest. In the last ten years, subject matters having musical progress duringthe Cultural Revolution period as a research background have caught the interestof domestic and international researchers.
Consequently, the following studies have emerged: studies onthe Cultural Revolution music phenomenon and music’s historical transition, individual case studies of music in that period, studies on music education, andstudies on the characteristics of Cultural Revolution music forms. The examplesinclude: “Let Music History Go Deep: Preliminary Studies of Cultural RevolutionMusic” by Liang Maochun (梁茂春), a Chinese musicologist; “NewSongs from the Battlefield: Historical Changes of Cultural Revolution Music” byWei Jun (魏军); “Pianos and Politics in ChinaMiddle-class Ambitions and the Struggle over Western Music” by Richard Curt Kraus,a British political scientist; and “Cultural Revolution Model Works and thePolitics of Modernization in China: An Analysis of Taking Tiger Mountain byStrategy” by Barbara Mittler, a German Chinese-literature scholar. Theresearchers conducted detailed analysis on the progress of each musical form inthis period as well as their perspectives, and provided many invaluablehistorical insights.
Because of the full-scale suspension of education in theCultural Revolution period and the enforcement of policies inducing therevolution, an unprecedented historical fault line appeared in the Chineseculture development. As a convenient means of propagating the Communist Partyto the general public, arts had become politicized during the process ofprogress. Furthermore, Mao Zedong, who led the Cultural Revolution, gave adirective that the arts should be applied to the progress of society andchanged frequently.
To be more specific, Mao insisted that the arts should bepopularized and serve politics. Consequentially, based on the implementation ofMaoist art philosophy, musical forms such as new folk music of Chinese modernperiod, reform of folk music, and music for plays were all replaced with onesthat had revolution characteristics such as revolutionary ballets, revolutionary model plays, revolutionary symphonies, revolutionary film music, and Mao’s quotations songs. Furthermore, by adopting beneficial cultures of theWest, efforts were made to raise the nationalistic sentiments of China and advancethe racialization of music. Pianos and western string instruments of thisperiod were allowed only for playing nationalistic music that had revolutionarycharacteristic, in addition to reformed Chinese traditional model operas, whileprohibiting classical music.
This study aims to perform a detailed analysis of the effectof the Cultural Revolution as a whole on the progress of Chinese music up to presentday by looking at the arts and literature policies and art philosophy under Mao’sregime in the period, changes in Chinese music, restriction on music creation, created music types during the period, and changes in music thereafter.
It is expected that, through this study, new light will beshed on the relationship between the music and politics of the CulturalRevolution period by having diversified perspectives. At the same time, it isexpected that it will provide the value of reference as a preliminary study toother researchers and contribute to the Chinese music study domain, regardlessof how small or large it is. It is hoped that, in future, scholars of Chinsemusic and history will criticize and rectify the limitations of this paper.
