The purpose of this research lies in establishing the historical and cultural contents utilizing the local cultural assets centered on the Weoljeongsa Temple on the Odaesan Mountain and in preparing an education plan utilizing them. And, through this, the historical value of the Weoljeongsa Temple was raised and the possibility of the development as a history education material and an educational plan utilizing this were explored. In this research, the historical background and flow of the Weoljeongsa Temple on the Mountain Odaesan are taken a look at through the various kinds of literature and historical records, and the historical and cultural resources possessed by the Weoljeongsa Temple are examined by domain. And, through the storytelling that is linked with the munsu faith and the locally transmitted tales, a plan that can establish the Weoljeongsa Temple as the historical and cultural contents is sought after, and a model for the utilization of the historical education and a teaching plan were proposed so that the understanding of the general public and the students can be heightened through the meaningful meetings with the cultural assets. Ever since the foundation of the Silla Dynasty and until the Joseon Dynasty and the modern and contemporary times, the Weoljeongsa Temple on the Mountain Odaesan in Pyeongchang-gun, Gangwon, has been on the diverse historical paths. If we examine the history of the Weoljeongsa Temple from its foundation until the contemporary times, we can find out that such flows and special features of the Korean history have been contained intact. The history of the Weoljeongsa Temple has been a meaningful standard for understanding the history of Buddhism in Korea. And the Weoljeongsa Temple has been possessing the digest materials that possess the historical and cultural values, including the accommodation of the Mountain Odaesan faith, which has been passed down from 'The Heritage of the Three States', the meaning as a munsu shrine, the locally-transmitted tales related to the Weoljeongsa Temple, etc. As such, in this research, through the storytelling utilizing the history, the cultural assets, the tales that have been transmitted, etc. that are possessed by the Weoljeongsa Temple, a plan for establishing the historical and cultural contents was presented as the following: Firstly, regarding the Weoljeongsa stone tower, a plan for the development of the Weoljeongsa stone tower was presented centered on the values and the meanings of the octagonal, nine-story, stone pagoda and the Bodhisattvas of the Weoljeongsa Temple. And, secondly, as, with regard to the production of the actual view landscape performance of the Weoljeongsa Temple, the Weoljeongsa Temple has been containing the diverse stories within its long history, if, with the Weoljeongsa Temple and the surrounding natural environment as the background, the foundation of the temple, the ups and the downs, the munsu faith, the Sejo tale, the stone towers, etc. are structured into one description, and, by having the content and the form different from the ordinary performances, if the performance is created with the history and culture of the region as the materials and through the participation by the regional residents, a lot of the favorable responses can be obtained. And it was proposed that the socio-economic contributions should be made to the local society. Thirdly, as a result of presenting a plan for making the Weoljeongsa Temple a historical and cultural park and as with the signifying of the space for understanding the past as a background, from the aspects of the lines of the movements and the space storytelling, and through the immersions in the flows and the spaces of the consciousness resulting from the story, it was mentioned that the interactions between the spaces and the visitors can be induced. And, as a method for planning such a series of the processes and through the space storytelling, the possibility of the Weoljeongsa Temple becoming an integrated history and culture park was presented. Fourthly, for the raising of the PR for, and the social interest in, the Weoljeongsa Temple, we proposed the organization of a Sudhana contest. It is judged that, for this, by bringing alive the meaning of Sudhana, who is a wise seeker of truth, a plan for expanding and utilizing the contents that sponsor and cultivate the excellent children and the talented youths in the region must be prepared. Fifthly, in order to heighten the conveniences of the tourists and heighten the value of the Weoljeongsa Temple, a plan for the historical education on the Weoljeongsa Temple, which was grafted with the IT technologies, and for the tourism information service was presented. Afterwards, a plan for a history class utilizing the historical and cultural contents of the Weoljeongsa Temple based on the field trips in this research, the historical and cultural inheritances of the region, and the constructive teaching approach method was presented. The plan for the class of this research has one's own critical understanding of history and the historical interpretations and judgments through the experiences and the researches as the goal. The class of this research is in the form of going on a field trip with the actual historical and cultural contents of the Weoljeongsa Temple centered on the parts of the ancient times and the medieval history in the domain of the Korean history, which are the units that pertain to the overall textbook of 'History 1' in junior high school. And by having 'the prior activities in the classroom- the onsite study- the afterwards activities in the classroom' as one bundle, by classifying into the 3 times, and by managing with the 2 topics, a total of 6 times of the subject classes are proceeded with. With the class activities in progress, regarding the historical facts or incidents which one came into contact newly, rather than the knowledge acquisition of them just the way they are, by becoming the history of an excellent person by oneself, too, and, through the experiences of the interpretations and the evaluations, again, through the investigations and the analyses, the interest in the historical study can be elicited.
This is, eventually, a solution for supplementing the problems of the current history education of the schools. And it can be evaluated as an alternative of the history education for finding the possibility of re-interpreting the history of our ethnic group while experiencing the sites of the dynamisms of our histories of the ancient times and the medieval times, which are linked with Buddhism, just the way they are. I hope that, centered on such a basic direction, even better historical and cultural contents of the Weoljeongsa Temple are developed and that the educational utilizations take place. And I have the high expectation that, by possessing the status as a new historical and cultural contents brand in the region, the Weoljeongsa Temple will be reborn as a living and breathing cultural asset.
