현재 대구읍성 중심의 대구 구도심 지역은 통시적인 서사구조를 바탕으로 역사적·문화적 스토리텔링 요소들이 가지고 있는 장소이다. 6.25 전쟁 후 다수의 문인들과 예술가들이 대구로 전쟁 피난을 온 뒤, 예술인들은 출신, 직업, 계층을 가리지 않고 향촌동의 다방과 선술집, 거리에서 전쟁의 시름과 창작열을 달래며 많은 이야깃거리들을 만들어냈다. 전쟁 후 예술인들이 떠나고 1970년대에 도청이옮겨가면서 향촌동은 본격적인 쇠퇴의 길을 걷게 되었다. 이후 향촌동의 상권이 동성로 쪽으로 옮겨가고 수제화 기능공과 피혁상 들이 수제화 골목을 형성하여 지금에 이르게 되었다.
최근 구도심을 재활성화하기 위한 방안으로 ‘스토리텔링을 통한 장소만들기’가 크게 떠오르고 있다. 특히 관광 수입을 위해 과거 대규모 개발 사업을 진행했던 것과 달리, 한정된 지역 자원을 스토리라는 줄거리에 꿰어서 효율적으로 지역을 홍보하고 정체성을 강화하는 공간 스토리텔링이 주목을 받고 있다. 이러한 추세에 힘입어, 대구시도 중구의 약전골목, 진골목, 봉산문화거리 등의 구도심 지역의 이야기를 공간적 프로그램으로 엮어내, 다양한 문화활동과 관광산업 활성화를 촉진하고 있다.
향촌동 일대에 남아있는 여러 전근대 건축물과 구도심 지역의 역사성, 그리고 일대 문화와 산업적 특수성은 과거 이 일대의 강한 문화적 흡인력을 다시 보여줄 수 있는 가능성을 가지고 있다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 향촌동과 경상감영 일대의 형성 과정과 변화, 현황으로 조사하고, 조사 내용을 바탕으로 지역의 고유한 스토리텔링 자원들을 추출한다. 마지막으로 이 스토리텔링 아이디어들을 토대로 방문자에게 지역적 장소성을 어필할 수 있는 독창적인 체험 관광 프로그램을 제안하고, 이 프로그램을 지원하고 수용할 수 있는 거리 환경 설계를 통해 대구 구도심 일부의 공동화 문제를 해결하고 지역적 정체성과 도시 경쟁력을 향상시킬 수 있는 방안을 연구하고자 한다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Daegu is not only one of the most industrialized and developed metropolitan area in South Korea but also a place with a great historic background and cultural context.
The Korean War was broke after the colonial rule of Japan was over, and many writers and artists were fled to Daegu in order to avoid the crisis of the war. These writers and artists actively communicated each other and did their job at many cafes in Hyangchon-dong. This unique event made Hyangchon-dong area have significant storytelling factors of the place. Many writers, painters, and musicians spent their time together at the bar or café in Hyangchon-dong regardless of age, gender, and genre which they dealt. However, many artists and writers went to their home and the provincial office moved to other area from the Hyangchon-dong, and this made Hyangchon-dong area deteriorated radically. This results most of the central function of the urban centre to move Dongsung-ro area which is next to the Hyangchon-dong, and this tendency allowed the handmade shoe industry to settle in the empty Hyangchon-dong area. The handmade shoe industry had been flourishing from 1970's to 1990's, but it is declining rapidly because of various factors.
The Daegu city office and citizens have made arduous efforts to stop this declining tendency of the Hyangchon-dong. However, these efforts usually limited to the improvement of superficial physical environment of urban space or performed as a redevelopment plan after total demolishing of existing environment. This process made a lot of monolithic and authoritarian results, and those results have constantly weakened the identity of Hyangchon-dong area and Daegu.
Considering that numerous pre-mode architectural assets, cultural contents with historical background, and specialized industry of the region, Hyangchon-dong and old urban centre of Daegu have a great possibility to recover its strong cultural influence and context. Therefore, in this design research, the subject site will be focused in Hyangchon-dong and it’s around area. The reason of the old urban centre's declining, problems of the site, and the possibility of enhancement of the site will be found by researching and analyzing the history and current phenomenon of the site. By that, the strong local storytelling contents and items will be discovered consequently. Finally the results of this thesis will provide the software and hardware solutions based on utilizing local story contents which can recover the site's sense of the place and enhance the competitiveness of the whole city.
