Korea has entered the multicultural society. However, the idea of a single-race and mono-cultural nation is still deeply rooted in the Korean society, the conflict with immigrants is developing into social problems.
Changes in the perceptions of multiple cultures should be made to improve these problems. While one of the solutions is to execute multicultural education policies more systematically than now, the reality is that Korean education policymakers have yet to set detailed directions on improvement and research of multicultural education and can’t make heads or tails of these directions. On the other hand, America called a nation of immigrants has been running multicultural education curricula for a long time and naturally teaching multiple cultures fit for the characteristics of each subject.
Looking for improvement plans for Korean multicultural education in this respect, this study is to apply them to history education with regard to multicultural education. History education is not simply to learn about the past but to develop the ability of understanding and accepting cultures of different times and space. For this reason, it is impossible to isolate how to understand the others, how and why to discriminate them, from ego and identity. Therefore, even though having tradition and curricula different from those of Korea, it is intended to make this point of argument clear, based upon the history education of America that created the prototype of social studies.
