This article illuminates the life and the poem world of Kim Ak whose literary work has not been established nowhere in Gwangju-Chonnam literary history even though he released two books of poem and just listed in literary career of Gwang-Chonnam in 1950's.
The real name of Kim Ak is Kim, Heong-soo and he graduated from Seoseok elementary school and Gwangju Godeungbotong School. He studied in Tokyo Art college and has a various career such as reporter and baseball player.
As he lived a unhappy life, his passion toward poem is ardent and worked with Kim Hyung-seong, Lee Soo-bok, Lee Dong-ju, Park Heob, Jang Young-gun, Lee Kyung-in, Park Jeong-on as a member of literary coterie of Sinmoonhak, Poetry and Prose, Sijeongsin, Chojeomsi. And he published a book of poetry of Yeongto(영토, 1956) and Oil of Kirkuk(키르쿡크의 石油, 1959).
His poem world largely can be looked into two points of ‘motherland’ and ‘hometown’. By presenting Christian symbol, he represented ‘motherland’ as sign based on the identity and expressed historic situation metaphorically. He referred a national discourse by representing tragic pain of the age through a Christian symbol.
Another point is the ‘hometown’ under the equivalence of ‘motherland’. We can see the tenacious life force of Jeolla-do people living with ‘Youngsan River’ singing hometown. He showed Jeollado spirit which doesn't loose their hope amid a devastated life and is the national spirit overcoming an ordeal history. In all, arriving back to ‘motherland’ and ‘hometown’ of his poem after the Korean war shows the expressions of national consciousness.
As seen above, the life and the poem world of Kim Ak itself is one of the procedures filling in the Gwangju-Chonnam literary history. A detailed study on his work which has not been dealt in this article will continue.
