조선후기는 농업은 물론 상 · 공업부문에서도 비약적인 발전을 이룬 시기였다. 조선후기 사회 · 경제적 변화는 여성 들로 하여금 적극적으로 경제활동에 참여하게 하였다. 조선후기에 경제적으로 성공한 여성도 많았을 것으로 생각되나, 현재까지 조선시대 많은 재부를 축적한 대표적 여성은 김만덕과 강원도 통천의 김씨 외에는 알려진 바 없다. 조선후기에 여성들은 상업이나 산업의 영역에서 활발히 활동을 해서 부를 축적해 나갔는데, 평안도 성천지방 목씨의 아내 전주이씨가 그 대표적 여성이다. 이씨는 관기와 양반의 사이에서 태어난 서녀였지만, 해좌 정범조에 의해 <睦氏婦傳>으로 人傳되어 그녀의 존재가 알려지게 되었다. 이씨는 속량된 후 평안도 성천의 목씨에게 출가하여 양잠업을 경영하여 많은 재산을 축적하였다. 그녀는 생활이 넉넉해지자 사람을 시켜 적실 자손들을 수소문해 찾아내어 전답을 마련해 주고 생활을 보살펴 주었다. 어렵게 살고 있었던 적실 자손들은 그녀의 경제적 도움을 받아 조상의 제사를 받들 수 있었으며 가문을 보존할 수 있었다. 전주이씨는 천출로 태어났지만 신분적 굴레에서 벗어나 경제력을 갖추고 자신의 삶을 능동적으로 개척한 여성이다. 이씨부인은 조선후기 상업 뿐 아니라 산업의 영역에서도 여성들이 남성 들 못지않게 경제활동을 활발히 해 자기 성취를 실현해 나가고 있음을 보여주는 대표적인 여성으로 기록될 수 있을 것이다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

In the Late Joseon Dynasty era, a remarkable development was achieved in agriculture along with in commerce and industry. Social and economical changes in that era caused women to participate energetically in business activity. In the Late Joseon Dynasty, many women were believed to be successful in business, but until now, no one other than Kim Man-deok and Kim living in Tong-chon, Kangwon province has been known as a rich woman accumulating enormous wealth. In that era, many women did their business actively to accumulate their wealth in commercial and industrial fields, and especially Mok`s wife named Lee who was of the Jeonju Lee family and living in Sungcheun, Pyungan-do could be named as a representative among them. Although Lee was born to an Yangban and an official Kisaeng as a person of low bil1h, she was introduced in the book of Moksibujeon(睦氏婦傳) by Bunnjoe Jung, and was known to the public. After having married to Mok living in Sungcheun, Pyungan-do, she accumulated enormous wealth through the sericultural business. When she was becoming a rich, she made people seek the legal wife`s family of her father, and took care of it with substantial financial aid. By virtue of Lee`s financial aid, the legal wife`s family could manage to feast to its ancestors and preserve its clan. Although she was born as an illegitimate daughter, she was a woman of self-made who lived her own life actively, and was so wealthy and prosperous that even Yangban could not despise her. The appearance of a woman like Lee was noticeable in that it was showing a new image of the woman who realized her own hope actively and successively in the midst of Joseon feudal society`s disintegration period. Lee could be written down as a successful entrepreneur woman representing the sericultural business in the Late Joseon Dynasty, and also as a person who overcame many difficulties and reached a high level of achievement through hard work, perseverance, and integrity.
