어느 시대를 막론하고 예술에 있어서 독창성의 문제만큼 중요한 부분은 없을 것이다. 그런 면에서 한국 회화사에서 조선시대 후기 풍속화는 단연 독보적인 위치를 차지한다. 조선후기 풍속화는 당 시대를 표현한 양식이 독특했고 그 회화적 가치를 조명하는 일은 매우 중요한 의의를 지닌다.
조선시대 후기에는 임진왜란, 병자호란을 겪고 18세기 실학사상(實學思想)의 영향으로 민본사상(民本思想)이 출현하고 미술사적으로 진경산수(眞景山水)가 유행하였다. 이러한 사회적인 변화와 개혁이 거듭되면서 중국의 아류적인 화풍이나 허세적인 형식에 따르지 않고 자신이 체험한 바를 꾸밈없이 표출한다는 자각 아래 생긴 화풍이 풍속화이다. 특히 이시기의 큰 줄기를 형성한 풍속화는 남성 위주의 풍속 놀이를 중심으로 한 단원(檀園) 김홍도와 여성 위주의 성적 감정을 표현한 혜원(蕙園) 신윤복을 들 수 있다. 이들의 작가적 창조성과 개성적 미감을 연구한다는 것은 곧 그 시대의 보편적인 미의식을 조명하고, 이해하는 계기가 될 것이다.
단원 김홍도와 혜원 신윤복의 풍자와 해학, 일상의 미는 현대에 와서도 충분한 감동을 준다. 사대부 위주로 형성된 왜곡된 작업양식에 서민의 생활과 건강한 일터를 주제로 삼거나 화면의 중심에 놓고 양반의 체면을 유지하기 위한 사대부들의 치부를 절묘하게 풍자, 고발하고 있다. 조선후기 풍속화는 중국의 영향권 아래 편협 되고 권위적인 미술적 환경에서 우리 자신의 삶으로 눈을 돌려 한국적인 미술을 개척한 독창적인 회화인 것이다. 연구자가 조선후기 풍속화, 특히 풍자와 해학의 문제를 연구하게 된것은 지극히 주관적으로, 연구자의 작업을 통한 체험과 관심에 그것이 합하였기 때문이다. 이는 어렵고 난해하기만 한 현대미술에서 대중과 호흡할 수 있는, 쉽게 이해되고 친근감을 느낄 수 있는 미술을 모색한 작가 의식에 따른 결과라 본다. 단원과 혜원이 그러했듯이 일반 서민들의 삶이 그림의 소재이고, 사회 부조리를 풍자와 해학의 정신으로 그림 속에 표현함으로써 보는 이들이 공감할 수 있고, 예술이 사회와 분리된 창조의 세계가 아니라 삶 속에서 즐거움을 창조하는 사회적 기능으로서 예술의 가치를 얻고자 함이다.
본 연구를 통하여 조선후기 풍속화에서 나타내고자 했던 풍자와 해학의 정신을 토대로 현대미술에 접목시키고자 하는 연구자의 작품세계가 진일보할 수 있는 정신적 기틀을 마련하였다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The originality may be the most Important in the art regardless of the age, and in that sense the genre painting during the latter period of Chosun Dynasty in the history of the Korean painting stands absolutely unchallenged in the literary world. The method to express the age in the genre painting during the latter period of Chosun Dynasty was very peculiar, and the work to retrospect the value of the paintings has a very important meaning.
The latter period of Chosun Dynasty experienced the Imjinweran (the Japanese invasion of Korea in 1592) and the Byeongjahoran (the Manchu war of 1636), and the democratic aspect was appeared by the influence of the realism in the 18thcentury, and the actual landscape painting of mountain and water in the history of arts was famous. Together with such repetition of the social change and revolution, the new style of painting appeared, not following the epigonic style of paintings of China and the form of fanfaronade but the awareness to express individual experience in plain, and it is the genre painting. The genre painting, which have particularly formed a big stream of paintings during this period, are centered with Danwon, Hong-do Kim expressing the genre play of men and Hyewon, Yoon-bok Shin expressing the sexual feeling of the women. Studying on the artistic creativity and individual esthetic sense will be a momentum to retrospect the universal esthetic consciousness and understand.
The satire and humor of Danwon, Hong-do Kim and Hyewon, Yoon-bok Shin, and their usual beauty still provide sufficient impression even in the modern age. They either showed the thematic development of or placed in the center of drawing the life and the workshop of the ordinary people on the basis of the distorted work form of the gentry, or satire and complaint exquisitely the acquisition of wealth of the gentry to maintain their dignity. The genre painting during the latter part of Chosun Dynasty is our original painting to develop the Korean style of arts turning away to our life from the intolerant and authoritative artistic environment under the influence of China. The reason to study on the genre painting, particularly on the problems of satire and humor is an extremely subjective aspect of the researcher, and the experience and interest through the works of the researcher has been coincided. I believe that it is the result of the artistic awareness in the modern arts that is difficult and hard to understand, searching for the arts to feel the opportunity to keep time with the public and easily understand and feel intimacy. As Danwon and Hongdo did, the life of the ordinary people is the material for the painting, and expressing the social irrationality in the painting by the spirit of satire and humor will attract the viewers to the same feeling. Art is not the creative world separated from the society but tries to get the value of arts as a social function creating pleasure in the life.
This study provided a spiritual pivotal point for the world of the researcher's works to advance further to be attached to the modern arts on the basis of the spirit of satire and humor that have been the subjects to be expressed in the genre painting during the latter period of Chosun Dynasty.
